The hours of sunlight are drawing in, the leaves are changing colour and the sky seems to stay a permanent state of grey, it’s official winter is on its way! If like me you are always cold, winter comes dressed in a 100 layers, hat, scarves, and gloves and if possible electric blanket around me. Shoes are the only way I can still have any control over my outfit. In the summer I am all about converse and sandals, they are thrown on as I run out to enjoy every minute of the sun that might not stay. But in winter shoes are everything. These are my 6 shoe swaps needed to get me through the winter months.
Heeled boots are a must, they can dress up any casual outfit and thick coat you might need for that nice meal out or cocktails with the girls, they look great with skinny jeans or a dress and tights, they elongate your legs and make them look skinner, what is not to love?
Swap your worn out deck shoes with their less preppy alternative to get you through the colder months. Go for a different colour like grey, green, navy etc to dress up your outfit. They are classic and timeless and dress any skinny jeans up in the office to say ‘I’ve got this’ or turn that dress and tights into the perfect ‘look how cute I am’ date outfit.
Probably not the most practical choice in the soggy weather but I love nothing more than slinging on some jeans and a jumper and putting my superstars or gazelles on, they are comfy, warm, and involve no effort with regards to the rest of my outfit. They also add some brightness to miserable days. I am lucky we have a very relaxed dress code for work so days I know I am going to be on my feet a lot these are a staple! Swap your not so white over worn converse for some neutral colours. These Gazelles are my must have this winter.
You can dress them up and all the way back down with ease. They give you timeless class, with so much heritage and old fashioned charm they make it impossible for you to really get it wrong. Go for a simple boot, you don’t need to go over the top with Chelsea boots they do all the hard work on for you. A good pair of Chelsea boots will take you through the day, morning- to-night dressing up or down and outfit for any occasion.
I can’t talk about practical winter footwear without mentioning the epitome of practical winter footwear perfection. If you are fortunate or not so fortunate to not be exposed to the muddy fields of England than these may not be needed, but I don’t know if I would survive a winter without them. I have had mine for four years now and they are still in the same shape as they day I received them. They have endured years of stable mucking out, snow, rain, hail, getting stuck in the mud, breaking water troughs covered in ice, long walks through fields, being left out in rain, being covered in horse hair whilst clipping and so much more. They are warm beyond words, comfortable beyond belief, more practical than a Landover is for off roading and they look great to top the modest list off. The country boot maybe a bit chunky for city dwellers looking for a winter boot but they do a wide range of footwear to suit all.
I have to confess I have been known to spend many winters wearing my ugg slippers as footwear. I hate uggs, I cant apologise, I think they are the ugliest things invented but turn them into slippers and I am all over them. I have been on the receiving end of many jokes at work as to whether I was wearing slippers or tribal footwear, comfort comes at no cost and as long as I am warm, I am happy and that is all that matters. For Christmas last year some kind people bought me the greatest gift of White Company slippers. They are the softest slippers I have ever owned and I don’t think a day has gone by since where I have not worn them, Money well spent! There is no greater feeling than getting in from work swapping your shoes for your slippers putting the kettle on and getting under that blanket.
Enjoy the coming season, it is my favourite!
